Support The YWCA Residence Renovation The Campaign for Furniture
In December 2009, the YWCA of White Plains and Central Westchester launched a $25 million green renovation of the YWCA Residence to position it for the future as a healthy, energy-efficient facility able to provide its residents with enhanced on-site counseling, case management, health and well-ness programming, and other supportive services.
The renovation will create eight new units of housing for the YWCA Residence as well as upgrades to the existing buildings including: repair and replacement of leaking roofs; installation of new elevators; energy-efficiency enhancements to the heating and cooling systems; improvements to lighting; and improving the life safety systems of the facility.
The renovation program will also offer residents a new “Sisters’ Village”, a welcoming common space that consolidates under-utilized common space into a large entertainment and computer center designed to promote friendship among residents and provide them with clothing items and free food from the Emergency Pantry.
The YWCA Residence renovation is designed and engineered to comply with NYSERDA’s Multifamily Performance Program and Enterprise Green Communities criteria.
The first phase is the renovation of Acheson Wallace Hall, which includes 100 units of housing as well as new administrative and case worker offices is now complete. Leasing of the newly renovated units to residents began in December 2010. The second phase will be the renovation of the Kennedy-Duncan Residence and is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2011.
With renovations well underway, the YWCA Residence has launched a campaign to raise $ 350,000 needed to purchase furniture for the women’s rooms and common areas. It makes a real difference when women like Judith, Aida and Pearl come into an environment that is warm, welcoming and furnished. With this in mind, the YWCA is asking friends and supporters to adopt rooms and sponsor living areas to ensure that every resident feels a sense of home, safety and support.
